Sexual Harassment In The Modeling Industry
By Ariel D.
Let's Face It
Women in many industries have faced and continue to face sexual harassment and other discrimination issues. Unfortunately, this is a problem that affects many professional spheres, including modeling and entertainment. In particular, many women are victims of so-called predators, who might dangle success and other professional promises.Younger models or people who are not established in the industry might be in a very vulnerable position, so it is easier for these predators to exploit them and take advantage of their status. According to many industry insiders, the modeling industry is actually filled to the brim with exploration and abuse at all levels.
Harassment Issues
It is not hard to believe this, especially considering high-profile harassment and abusive cases such as the recent accusations against Harvey Weinstein, which affected many world-famous actresses. In fact, the Weinstein story affected the modeling industry very directly, since many models, including Battilana Gutierrez (also known as Ambra), have been involved in the allegations.Apparently, Weinstein and even controversial characters such as Bill Cosby were actually “receiving” girls from modeling agencies, who were almost acting like escort service providers, denoting a widespread culture of abuse and corruption in the industry.
In some cases, sexual harassment, as well as fair labor conditions, can be issues that the modeling world is still facing to this day. In may cases, models prefer to stay silent, not only for fear of retribution but also because they are afraid that becoming a victim could damage their professional image. For this reason, it is likely that sexual harassment in the modeling world is underreported.
Ultimately, sexual harassment is a problem that needs to be eradicated, not only from the modeling industry but from society as a whole. We are moving forward as a culture, but there is still a long way to go. One of the best weapons at our disposal is awareness.
